How do you discover and research your competitors?

Hey, I'm in an early stage startup and I'm researching our competitors and major events in our space.

Could you recommend any tools or best practices that help with this?

Talk to your potential customers! Ask how they are currently solving the problem you are trying to solve. You end up with a wide list of alternative solutions and competitors.

I see alternative solutions as solutions people use to solve their problem but are not designed to solve that problem per see (or target a different customer segment). Like Excel and duct tape.

Versus competitors who are actively solving the problem and are targeting the same customer segment as you.
